Cairns has a modern drinking water system supplied from protected rainforest catchments in Far North Queensland. Water is sourced from local catchments and managed by Cairns Regional Council through a network of treatment facilities, reservoirs and pipelines that delivers reliable drinking water to homes and businesses across the Cairns region.
Cairns' drinking water supply primarily comes from the Behana Creek and Copperlode Falls Dam catchments. These high-quality water sources are collected from the Wet Tropics rainforest before being treated at the Behana Creek Water Treatment Plant and the Copperlode Water Treatment Plant, then distributed throughout Cairns and surrounding suburbs.
During treatment, raw water undergoes multiple processes designed to remove sediments, organic material, microorganisms and other impurities. Conventional treatment commonly includes coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation and filtration. Disinfection is then applied to maintain safe water quality throughout the distribution network. Fluoride is also added to the public water supply in accordance with Queensland regulations.
